“To acknowledge our ancestors means we are aware that we did not make ourselves, that the line stretches all the way back, perhaps, to God; or to Gods. We remember them because it is an easy thing to forget: that we are not the first to suffer, rebel, fight, love, and die. The grace with which we embrace life, in spite of the pain, the sorrows, is always a measure of what has gone before.”—Alice Walker (from a wonderful collection of quotes at Sun Magazine)
“The claim, ‘I was only following orders’ has been used to justify too many tragedies in our history. Starfleet does not want officers who will blindly follow orders without analyzing the situation. Your actions were appropriate for the circumstances, and I have noted that in your record.”—
“When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life.”—John Lennon (via gwenmccartney) (via pandoraxxx)
This morning I was showing a zombie shooting gallery toy to one of the girls I work with. I happened to mention that while guns are cool in a zombie apocalypse, knives and axes don’t run out of ammo. They do, unfortunately, allow the zombies to get a little close for comfort. So really it’s best to keep both a long and short ranged weapon handy.
"Then, if they get to close you can be all ‘Back off! Get your own Sandwich!’." I said.
She looked at me funny and said “Do you have a lot of sandwich nightmares?”
I said I didn’t. So she tells me this story.
Apparently a few years ago they had a family from Sweden that they knew staying with them. A couple and their two daughters - 16 and 6.
One night the 6 yr old wakes up bawling after having a nightmare. It takes the parents ages to calm her down. Everyone feels bad for her and they’re all sitting in the kitchen waiting to go back to bed.
When she’s calm and going back to sleep, the parents come out to the kitchen.
"She dreamed that her sister was making a sandwich and cut it in half. Then she gave her the smaller half."
